I Spy I Buy | Product advice for Boomers

According to the U. S. Fire Administration, “fire departments in the United States responded to nearly 1.6 million fire calls in 2007″.  About 4000 Americans die each year, 25,000 people are injured, and property losses reach $8.6 billion. Those are all very large numbers.  Again from the USFA, “To put this in context, the annual losses from floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters combined in the United States average just a fraction of those from fires.”

Fire safety experts say that a person usually has less than 3 minutes to safely escape a house fire.  A terrifying fact is that most children will sleep through the high pitched sound of a smoke detector – even if the alarm is shrieking just outside their bedroom door.  A recording of a familiar voice, such as a parent, is proven more likely to wake up a sleeping child in time to escape such an emergency.

According to a Pediatrics article published October 2, 2006:

The median time to awaken was 20 seconds in the voice alarm group compared with 3 minutes in the tone alarm group. The median time to escape was 38 seconds in the voice alarm group compared with the maximum allowed 5 minutes in the tone alarm group.

If there are children in your life please take a moment to watch this TV news report.  First they tested the effectiveness of a traditional alarm.  Then they tested an alarm using  the recorded voice of a parent.  You will be amazed at the dramatic difference in the results.  Keep in mind experts tell us we have no more than 3 minutes to safely exit a burning building.  Every second counts.

What can you do?

First make sure your traditional alarms are working.  They remain the best basic alarm for your home.

Secondly buy a Voice Alert alarm for each child under 16 years old.   The Voice Alert employs patented technology and operates in conjunction with your current home smoke detector.  A receiver/speaker unit is placed near your child’s bed.  When smoke is detected in your home and your traditional alarm sounds, your recorded voice wakes them so they can safely escape the danger.

The Voice Alert receiver plays your pre-recorded voice message, alerting your child to the danger of a fire.  Every second counts…protect your family with Voice Alert.

What products will we feature?  We will be looking for products that are simple to operate, perform their primary function well, adapt for physical limitations.  Another way to put is that we will not suggest tiny, complicated, wiz-bang products. We don’t care if a cell phone plays music, takes pictures, records audio notes, syncs with you computer and, oh, by the way, is also a communication device.

For example there are two excellent cell phone choices.  There is the Jitterbug that is sold by First Street that is simple to operate, has a big display and big buttons.  There is also the C900 from Clarity.  It has a large display, is easy to operate and has adjustable audio.

There are devices to enable watching TV without having to blast the volume.  The folks at TV Ears have a whole line of excellent products.

There are wireless remote weather devices that are easy to install and have nice big readouts.  That’s what we’re talking about.

Sometimes there are products that must do many things in an emergency situation.  We’ll look at those as well.
